Sustainability Update: Green energy, recycled food waste and the quest for sustainable prawns

Sustainability has always been a big part of what we do, but this year we’re really upping the ante. There’s always room for improvement. Here are a few things we’ve been up to lately, and if anyone has any advice or tips that can help us do even better, please let us know.

On the trail for sustainable prawns…

We have found farmed prawns that we think tick all the boxes but we’re doing further research and checking a few other recommended suppliers to see what they stock. If you know of anyone, please let us know!

Weighing the costs of green energy

Yesterday we learned that if we move to Green Energy we will not pay the climate change levy that we pay to our two current energy suppliers. We will pay less for the daily standing charge that all electricity companies charge but more for our green energy. On the plus side, our consciences will be eased. On the negative side, it will cost more. I think that we will make the change and explain to everyone that electricity must not be taken for granted. We will ensure that ovens are only turned on just before being required, lights turned off if not being used, likewise fans, etc and try and reduce our consumption too thereby bringing down what we spend and, at the same time, helping the planet.

Recycled stationery: why is this one so hard?

We’ve been looking to replace our current (non-recycled) stationery with recycled stationery or, better still, FSC-certified products. We thought this would be easy but we’ve discovered that these products are still quite limited in range. Again, if anyone can recommend someone, do get in touch.

Recycling our waste food

We are on the verge of having our waste food recycled – yippee! We discovered that our current refuse removal guys also recycle food waste so getting this started will be very easy to set up.

We really are moving forwards.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, if you have any suggestions that can help us make more responsible choices for the environment – be they suppliers, products, ideas or tips – then please get leave a comment or drop us a line.
