The best sustainable charities in the UK

FareShare

As the UK’s largest charity focused on food waste, FareShare redistributes leftover food to charities, who then transform it into meals for those less fortunate.  In 2018, they managed to rescue 20,838 tonnes of food, creating 46.5 million meals. They welcome volunteers to help with the redistribution process – you could assist in the warehouse, drive one of their vans, provide customer service or administration help or help to fundraise.

The Felix Project

The Felix Project works with 200 charities and 200 suppliers to link surplus food with disadvantaged adults and children. They provide a free door-to-door service, collecting extra food from hospitality businesses and delivering it to charities who then create fantastic meals for those who need it most.

Feedback

With a mission to transform our food system and regenerate nature, Feedback is empowering people to achieve positive change within their community. Through investigative research, public events and a number of different campaigns, they’re working to convince policymakers to think about where their food is coming from and going.

WRAP

WRAP is a UK-based charity that works with governments, businesses and communities to encourage a move towards resource sustainability. Amongst other campaigns, their Love Food Hate Waste initiative aims to reduce food waste by encouraging individuals to buy what they are likely to eat and store their food in the best way possible to ensure longevity.

Sustainable Food Trust

Established in 2011, Sustainable Food Trust aims to promote sustainable food and farming systems, working with other organisations to enhance their initiatives. They advocate for diverse and integrated food production systems by targeting leaders of organisations and promoting best practice and policies amongst the wider community.

Foodcycle

With projects all over the UK, Foodcycle aims to reduce food waste while ensuring the most vulnerable don’t get hungry. A team of volunteers rescues surplus food from local suppliers and create delicious meals for guests from the community. Everyone sits down to enjoy the meal together, breaking down barriers in the process.

City Harvest

City Harvest joins Foodcycle in fighting the good fight against food waste. They redistribute leftover food from restaurants, grocers, manufacturers, wholesalers, hotels and caterers to organisations all over London that feed the city’s most vulnerable people. To date, they’ve reallocated £7.5 million worth of food and offset 9,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
